'Italiese' Unpacked: Taking a Diaspora's Hybrid Language to #1 on Google
Objective
Italy Segreta commissioned me to leverage my Italian-Canadian expertise for their "Abroad" issue. My objective was to introduce and educate an international audience about Italiese—a unique fusion language spoken by Italian communities in English-speaking countries like Canada, showcasing the distinct linguistic identity of the Italian diaspora.
Challenge
The main challenge was explaining this unique hybrid language, given the scarcity of formal information due to its informal status. I needed to introduce its vocabulary and convey its true significance—a language of resilience and determination for immigrants connecting across dialects, often through Italianized English words for absent concepts.
Process & Solution
I thoroughly researched Italian-Canadian communities, analyzing word origins and their historical context. This revealed how the absence of certain terms in immigrant vocabularies—for example, 'dishwasher,' which didn't exist when many left Italy—led to Italianized English words or adaptation due to dialect differences. The article then explained the language's history, development, usage examples, and future.
Outcome
The article consistently ranked as the number one result on Google for 'Italiese' search queries. This top ranking proves its effectiveness in educating and engaging a global audience on this unique linguistic phenomenon. It has since become a leading educational resource on Italiese, even surpassing existing newspaper articles and documentaries.
